Ceramic tiles have been the go-to material of choice for homeowners for decades. Classically beautiful, ceramic tile has frequently been used in kitchens and baths around the world because they’re durable, easy to clean, resistant to fire, frost, moisture and stains; and available in a variety of patterns and colors.
Ceramic tile comes in all shapes and sizes but each style is given a PEI Rating (from the Porcelain Enamel Institute) from 1-5 which determines where the tile will be used.
Wall tiles are rated 1. Since they are used on a wall vs. on the floor, they receive no foot traffic. A PEI rating of 2 applies to wall and bathroom floor use, where they receive light traffic. A tile with a PEI rating of 3 applies to applications such as countertops, and walls and floors where there is normal foot traffic. A tile with a PEI rating of 4 applies in areas where there is moderate to heavy traffic. Finally, a tile with PEI rating of 5 can be used in areas that receive heavy to extra heavy traffic, including commercial and industrial settings.
