What is a Backsplash?

Kitchen with white subway tile

A backsplash serves two purposes. Functionally, a back splash is a wall covering in a kitchen that extends vertically up from the countertop or other work surface to the upper cabinets to protect the wall from spills, splatters, grease and water stains as a result of cooking and cleanup. Ideally, it should be made of a material that’s easy to clean considering that spills and splatters in the kitchen often occur no matter how careful the cooks who work in it.

Aesthetically, however, a backsplash can be a beautiful design element that can enhance any kitchen decor. For example, a small back splash located directly behind the stove can serve as a unique focal point and is particularly dramatic when installed in a larger-sized kitchen. But a backsplash can also be extended around the kitchen above all the countertops, bringing a look of cohesiveness to the space.

Knowing that a back splash serves two vital purposes, the decision to have one is relatively easy. The challenge is choosing from the thousands of backsplash styles, materials and colors that exist to truly make your kitchen an expression of your unique personality.

If budget is a consideration, Fasade decorative thermoplastic panels are an inexpensive, yet elegant, option to consider.
